Prof P J Joseph was born on 11th March 1942 at Cherai in Vypeen. After graduation in Physics and Mathematics from Kerala University, he decided to study English Literature and took M.A. Degree from Agra University (U.P) India. In 1968 he joined the English Department of Union Christian College, Alwaye and continued there for nearly thirty years and retired as Professor and Head of the Post-graduate & Research Department of English, in 1997.
He has served in various capacities as the member of the State Level Academic Core Group for the Total Literacy Project of Kerala, Project Director & Member of the Executive of various Environmental Protection Programmes, Vice President of Kerala Counselors’ Forum, Vice President of Kerala Chapter of the Confederation of the NGOs of Rural India. He was actively involved in the Slum Rehabilitation Programme at Alwaye.
Prof P J Joseph represented India at various International Conferences and presented papers and has travelled widely. He was one of the founding members of Commonwealth Association for the Education and Training of Adults [CAETA]. The Kingston University, U K, conferred on Prof. P J Joseph 'International Visiting Fellowship' in 2007. UNESCO Institute for Education, Hamburg, Germany, has enlisted his name in the UNESCO/UIE Exchange Network and World Bank has sought his help in collecting details of literacy activities like Instructional strategies, statistics of enrollment and evaluation.
The Confederation of the NGOs of rural , New Delhi had conferred the award of ‘The Servant of the Poor’ at their Annual Conference held in Bangalore in 2010, taking into consideration his services during the past twenty years. He have published three travelogues in Malayalam, translated Nitya Chaithanya Yati’s brief biography of Sree Narayana Guru and two books of Greek stories in English. His articles have been published in various National and International journals and publications. He was the editor of 'The Lamp’, the Toc H India Journal.
Prof P J Joseph is serving President of Toc H Group of Educational Institutions, Cochin that includes Toc H Public School and Toc H Institute of Science & Technology (TIST) which together provide a seamless conduit of learning from cradle to career.
